Hills Of Light
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14
In the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus, He took the time to do first things first. In this passage, He took His disciples up on a mountainside and sat them down to listen. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxed while Jesus instructed them on the most important feature of walking with God, the heart. After the initial heart adjustment with the Beatitudes, He helped them understand the need to be hills of light. Each one of them, in their respective roles, would need to be seen as the light of God and Jesus knew it would never happen if the heart was not first set on the right course.
If you look closely, you will see that Jesus follows the theme of the heart all the way through the Sermon On The Mount. For three chapters He illustrates situations of the heart.
Centering the heart in God is the most important feature of the Christian walk. When centered there, each of us will shine like city lights on a dark night. There is no mistaking the light. It is there and it is there for all to see; and it will not be missed. It can be ignored, but not missed.
If you and I ever feel that our light is dim in the world, then we have but one course of action to take. Go to Jesus and Jesus will take us back to the heart.
Because of His instruction to these few men on the side of the mountain that day, they were able to go out into the world and ultimately influence millions in the light of God. Now, I just wonder if that might be true with us?
